Tomorrow is Election Day in Alexandria. Given Virginia's key position as a blue state in 2008, national political observers will be watching Commonwealth elections closely as a preview of things to come in 2012. Of immediate interest is whether the Virginia Senate, will go Republican and give the GOP complete control of the General Assembly.
Some of the state-level races for offices in our area are foregone conclusions and hence are complete yawners (i.e., David Englin in the House of Delegates and Adam Ebbin in the State Senate).
However, the local race to watch will be the one for Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk. Incumbent Democrat Ed Semonian — who is 77 years old — is facing his first challenge in 32 years from Chris Marston, former chairman of the Alexandria Republican City Committee.
City Democrats have been rallying fiercely around Mr. Semonian, perhaps sensing that the race for this position — not one that typically impacts most Alexandrians directly — will demonstrate whether general dissatisfaction among Alexandrians with BRAC, the waterfront and many other issues will translate into "throw the rascals out" momentum for the Council race in 2012.
The polls will be open from 6 am to 7 pm tomorrow.

I voted already. And I voted for an all republic ticket, just because I am one of the "throw the bastards out" people. I am still so angry over the City's continued containment/ARHA votes, from the new Bland to Pendleton park to the impact on our local school and neighborhood crime due to the containment.
If the Dems won't handle the Mayor's 2012 race internally then it's up to us to plunk and flunk Bill Euille. If it means first voting for Marston then I'll hold my nose and do it. It's hard to get beyond Marston's wife's involvement with a certain far right female presidential candidate. If the Repubs are listening find some MODERATE Council candidates so they'll at least have a chance.
It looks like Mr. Semonian won quite easily. https://www.voterinfo.sbe.virginia.gov/election/DATA/2011/EB178FD6-875D-4B0D-A295-900A0482F523/Unofficial/00_510_s.shtml
