Wishing You a Soft Christmas

Here's some good end-of-year news for neighborhood parents:

The Charles Houston Recreation Center will be adding a "soft playroom" sometime in late January or early February.

The Parks & Recreation Department created a soft playroom at Chinquapin Recreation Center a few years ago in response to parental demand and it has been very popular.

Designed for preschool age children five and younger, a soft playroom offers a clean play environment to burn off energy. Parents, guardians and their kids can share play zones loaded with soft toys and activities, while meeting with existing playgroups and making new friends.

Everybody needs to read the Gazette's front page story on BRT, note the city's receipt of stimulus money then resolve to stop posting anonymously on the subject. Only Charlotte Landis had been faithful to the cause and we thank her for her efforts on our behalf.

"Everybody needs to read the Gazette's front page story on BRT..."

1) Not sure what this comment has to do with the Growler's story on soft play area.

2) Heartily agree kudos go to Charlotte for all of her efforts on Rt. 1 issues. However, it takes a village and we wouldn't have gotten this far without other voices supporting Charlotte - there is strength in numbers so the next time Rt 1 issues show up on Council docket please take the hour or so it requires to go down and speak. This battle is far from over!

3) In looking at the Gazette article, it is great to see the alignment (first street to adjacent to the metro tracks) pictured on p. 8 is that the ICCA/WOTCA fought for during the Braddock planning process. Now, we just have to make sure they follow through.

Soft play or hard ball neighborhood politics continue. Adherence to the alignment did not come easily. As for Charlotte, it's the holidays and I thought her years of hard work she should be acknowledged. Merry Christmas to all!

The piddling amount of stimulus dollars relative to the infrastructure work that the entire project that planners want from Arlington to PW would eventually require would be much better spent on roads with HOV and HOT lanes, already idealized for rapid transit. But this the first step that the planenrs are going to use to try to ram an extension down our throats and through our meighborhoods.

I am not sure why everyone gets so worked up over BRT. This is Alexandria; we can't build anything here on time and on budget.

Where do you think the money will come from to build this?

"I am not sure why everyone gets so worked up over BRT."

Do you have any clue how many meetings persistent citizens letters it took to get the city to adhere to the previously agreed upon route from the Yard to Braddock metro? If you live along the Route 1 corridor you have to pay attention. Oversignt, more oversight, repeated oversight.

This is off topic, but I happened to notice that the Madison is back on the docket, asking for an increase in the number of units, a reduction in parking, etc. Anyone know more?? The City doesn't have the link up to the application yet.

Looks like they want to take out the retail units and replace them with more residential units. Cant blame them, since retail has been a disaster around here.

I am just shocked that the Madison project still has any life. People have said that another rental unit shortage is coming because of the slowdown in new construction over the past couple of years, coupled with the continued flow of new people in the area, but it's hard to envision with so much capacity now, at least outside of the popular areas like DC and Arlington. The Asher is only going to add to the existing supply that we already have in our area. Then we have the projects at Potomac Yard starting soon. And the Meridian is already far from full and I have a hard time believing the Monarch is over 75% occupied.

It's great that The Asher and Madison are going forward, but I am just kind of surprised that they even are.

The Madison representatives talked about the changes they were proposing at the November WOTCA meeting. The biggest that was to eliminate the retail on the north side - nearest the carpenter shelter- and replace it with more units. Appears to be a lesson learned from the Monarch whose retail sits empty.

Finally! A Place where City Council can meet! Nice soft walls and floors.

Think we can give them some pretty colored pieces of felt to play with as they raise our taxes once again?
