Yesterday the Alexandria Police Department announced the apprehension of three suspects in the January 18 murder of Yellow Cab driver Khalil Siddiqi at Princess and Buchanan Streets in our neighborhood. It was the first homicide of the year in the City.
Alexandria detectives arrested two adults and one juvenile for the murder. Joshua Moore, 18, of Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Jamal Berry, 20, of Alexandria were charged with murder and robbery. The 16 year-old juvenile, also an Alexandria resident, was charged with murder and robbery.
“This case was solved quickly because of the tireless efforts of our detectives and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office,” said Alexandria Police Chief David P. Baker in an official press release, “I appreciate everyone’s diligence, focus, hard work, and timely results in this case.”
And may the Growler say on behalf of readers that we appreciate the work of our police force in closing this case so quickly.

What is it with Prince George criminals coming to Alexandria? Are we more tolerant here? Or is PG county cracking down more and driving them here?
And I am glad for Mr. Siddiqi's family that they are closer to ending this nightmare.
I thank the Police Force for finding the killers so quickly. I figured that this would have been an unsolved crime. Thank you.

Yes. And yes. See the article in today's washington post about PG's crime rate.
I also thank the police detectives for their quick work in solving this crime. I hope there isn't any tolerance shown in their sentencing, although it saddens me that such young men are involved in such an awful crime.
Just a reminder that there will be a fundraiser for Mr. Siddiqi's family next Thursday, February 12, upstairs at the Fish Market (105 King St), from 7-11pm.
Question... were the alexandria "residents" longtime Alexandria residents or former P.G. County residents?
Jamal played on my lacrosse team, kind of shocking.
They are just kids! Hate to sound like an old fogey- but what is this city coming to?? Maybe the new rec center will give 16 year olds something to do, but it sure seems that the activities there probably won't hold the interest of teens who'd rather play with guns.
Jamal is my ex boyfriend and i still dont think he did it. There were 3 ppl and onli 1 gun shot so there for only one person had to be holding the gun so to charge them ALL the same does not make since at all

It's called the felony murder rule. The cab driver was apparently killed in the middle of a robbery. The robbery is a felony, so that makes all three of the robbers guilty of murder even if only one of them held the gun and pulled the trigger. If he is proven guilty, he should spend at least a few decades in jail. And thank heaven for that.

Note the good story by Michael Lee Pope at http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/article.asp?article=326625&paper=59&cat=104
It provides the name of an allegedly involved 16 year old, and reports that a .45 caliber gun was found in Jamal Berry's car. The same sized gun killed the cab driver.
All of this for $60.
Me knowing Jamal, he is not capable of doing such a thing! I know him very well. This is indeed my boyfriend of 3 years and he wouldn't harm a fly, especially if it didn't doing anything to him or his loved one. Jamal was on his way to being a junior in college and played lacrosse faithfully. He wouldn't jeopardize it for no one and not for somthing so petty. I am not making excuses for him neither, I just know him VERY well and being real about the situation!!!
