If the Growler is not mistaken, the Proving Ground is the area in the upper left of this map, while the main post of Ft. Belvoir is in the lower right corner.
The Proving Ground is bounded by I-95, Rolling Rd., and the Fairfax County Parkway.
You can see Route 1 at the bottom of the map. It isn't close to the Proving Ground.

Thanks, Growler, but I would still appreciate JAG telling us how most people arrive and depart the area.
More news about how the City is concentrating on Del Ray at our expense.
I just read an article in the Times about "The Shops at Del Ray" which will be a new 12,430 square retail development on Mount Vernon Avenue, replacing a gas station.
Now, I've spent numerous hours listening to City consultants tell me that there can't be more retail in the Braddock road area because the area can't absorb it, as there are already strong retail hubs on King Street and Potomac Yard. Well, then why the huge new retail development in Del Ray?
I am SO sick of all this crap. We are getting huge density, BRT on our doorstep, concentrated public housing (the new Bland plan is NOT dispersal), and little retail. Del Ray gets new retail, NOT ONE new unit of public housing, and it's roads are protected from BRT.
Enough.

At least the Madison got through P&Z last night...if nothing else that development was needed to show some progress towards revitalization in this area.....

It's not huge.

I am unable to find the details of the Madison plan on line, other than a description from several years ago that included a Harris Teeter. Can someone tell me more about the plan for The Madison? Condos or Apartments? Address? Retail? Thanks!

Sorry, The Army blocks access to blogger, so I only get to read and respond when I am at home...
Being in the Army has taught me to value freedom in part by the silly things they deny.
In any case, currently there is only wilderness in that part of Fort Belvior, so there is no traffic. The deal is they used to train young second lieutenants on explosives there, so cleaning up random unexploded ordinance has been a big deal. Apparently they have mostly cleaned it up now and are working on connecting the Fairfax County Parkway through the area now, scheduled for completion in about 2 years.
The plan calls for REX service from the Alexandria metro station, connecting through springfield/springfield mall area. Otherwise access is via 95/Fairfax County Parkway. The Growler does have the location correct.
The major tenant is apparently the National Geospatial Agency (NGA), the fancy map making people, moving out of Northwest DC with 8,500. The other is Washington Headquarters Services (whatever that is) with 8,700.
The only tenant that is moving on Main base that will affect Alexandria is they are expanding the hospital in a big way(about 2,000 additional docs, nurses, etc). They are also dramatically expanding housing by 1800 units, so they are talking about 100-200 additional trips on and off the post per day for hospital personnel, displaced from Walter Reed. The only part that will affect Alexandria is relatives and visitors to wounded soldiers will land at National and come south instead of going into the city. The patients will arrive via helicopter or (rarely) ambulances.

Does anyone know when construction on the Madison will start? Also when the new date for Pendleton Condos construction is? Looking forward to the ground breaking on both of these. They are both great symbols of hope for our neighborhood.

Thanks a lot, JAG, for taking the time to respond. Slowly you are making the case-I think-for the elimination of the southbound BRT proposal. If Moran is successful and post 9/11 jobs move close to Springfield then I think a more appropriate transportation initiative is metro to Springfield including connector buses from Springfield south. Alternatively the appropriate authority can extend metro from Springfield to Belvoir. Let's spend our money wisely.
