Who says this neighborhood doesn't care about open green space?Folks up at Braddock Place have organized in opposition to the proposed condominums at 1261 Madison Street, which will occupy most of the last green open space near Metro. They were apparently spurred on by the fact that the City recently removed the property from the list of possible open space acquisitions.
At Tuesday night's City Council meeting, Vice Mayor Andrew Macdonald presented a petition signed by more than 800 residents near the site, which reads:
If you are interested in supporting this petition, drop the Growler and E-mail and the Cranky One will put you in touch with the petition organizers. We support preserving the green space at Braddock Metro locally known as the PBS Plaza Pocket Park from development by Bradley Gray, or others. Building on this land will lead to excess overcrowding and congestion, which we oppose. Because this parcel is under imminent threat of loss to development, it must be added promptly to the city's open-space acquisition plan. Therefore, we request that the city permanently restrict this land from private development, and acquire the entire property for green-space preservation.

Good luck! getting the city to buy the park. Since the city's goal is metro oriented transit development the argument is one of opportunity costs. I don't think the petition, though impressive in numbers, really makes the case.
If the city's goal is "metro oriented transit" why is nothing big being built on the Del Ray side of the train tracks, including the Potomac Yard dogleg?
I didn't say that life was fair I only told you what case statement would best sell. Open space argues in favor of low density and that's not how city staff is thinking now.
So far I don't see many bloggers flocking. The issue belongs to those most likely to enjoy the park.
Isn't the open space at Braddock Park (aka the Del Ray Side) required open space for the middle school? I know the growler loves to bash del ray, but has del ray really said anythign about this? What about Rosemont? Isn't that section of the park in Rosemont? Either way, it seems the talk about that park is a red herring as it is likely needed to meet State requirements for play fields near a school.
This petition seems like an attempt by some of our neighbors to keep a nice park in their back-yard. Isn't that land already zoned for a commercial building? Anybody have any idea what it costs? I bet millions. Did the petition signers also agree to a tax increase? I'd rather have the city give us new lights, better sidewalks and improve our alley's before it spends millions on that piece of land. Doesn't the draft Braddock Road Plan keep a portion of that open space? What is better half of it open space for free or all of it open for millions?
I thought the potomac yard dogleg as the growler calls it is slated for development. I think that last bit of land closest to the metro is supposed to get buildings.
call me a flocker ... the issue is housing development without local business development. PBS leaves. Harris-Teeter abandons ship. I take it you advocate mushroom farms of housing, jammed in whenever possible?
That is a good point, there is too much housing in the Braddock plan and not enough commercial.
